Empaths are often people pleasers or diffusers of situations. They will often do whatever they can to keep the peace with and between others to avoid being exposed to negative or harsh energy. Unfortunately, this is done at their own expense and can lead to the empath suffering in silence. Empaths often ignore their own physical and emotional pain to put others first. For example:

■ taking care of the mental and physical needs of others before themselves

■ making sure another is feeling calm or worry free, even when personally stressed

■ doing something for another person even when completely exhausted

Most people are quick to discuss what is bothering them with other people, but an empath will usually not do this. Empaths are known to carry any burdens (emotional or physical) they may be feeling within and try to tackle the issue alone rather than share it with another. They will simply ignore their own burdens or ailments until the issue gets loud enough that they are pretty much forced to deal with it.

Take time for you. Instead of bottling up your emotions or letting your pains develop, allow yourself decompression time daily and time to treat your own wounds. You cannot help others if your energy is low and you are trying to pour from an empty cup. Rest, go for a walk, read, meditate, go to a yoga class—do whatever resonates with you and helps you find balance.

Express your needs. It’s also important to learn to say NO and lose the guilt around saying it. “No” is actually a complete sentence. Express yourself to others. If there are people, places, or situations that are not serving you, speak up about it and let others know how you are feeling. This gives the opportunity for change; if the situation still does not change, it is time for a reassessment and possible release.

Listen to your body. The body often expresses to us when something is wrong both physically and emotionally. If something feels off, it’s because something usually is. According to Louise L. Hay, author of Heal Your Body A–Z, there is a reason for pain in specific areas of the body, described in the chart below.
